James Nicholson is attacked by an Me110, who sets him on fire. Just as Nicholson is getting out of the cockpit, he sees that the 110 is going to overshoot and go straight into his sights, so he stays with his burning crate, and fires at the 110, which in turn is set on fire, and crashes in Southampton, after which Nicholson bailed out with injuries from the cannon fire of the 110, and then was shot in the buttocks by a trigger happy member of the Home Guard while descending on his parachute. For his bravery he won the VC.
(Sorry for jumbled writing, I can't remember the exact story)
