Bits 'n pieces.

Uncle Joe is almost finished. The bombs, gear doors and some minor bits and pieces need to be added to complete this model. I did not make any historical Pe-2 but this one looks realistic enough. The picture of Stalin and the extra instruments I made on the dashboard are a bit less visible with the canopy attached. But that was to be expected. This kit is a bit funny really. I started it shortly after the Pe-2 patch came out. If you read the manual and it says to glue part A to part B, you can safely assume that it will not fit.

Some parts are misformed in such a way that it is completly unclear where or how to fit it. Luckily, the quality of the plastic is good so it didn't react to the super glue and filler too much.

To be honest, I am quite happy with this being finished. It was alot of work and it will look pretty next to my Il-2 and MiG-3.

Goofy Russian colors! Looks good. What kit is it and how will did it go together?

It is the 1:48 kit from 'historic plastic models' or 'HiPM' for short. There should be a later variant Pe-2 (with the little gun turret) available from Italeri. This one is quite crude on details but it comes with some nice PE set. The quality of the plastic is also good so, the filler won't damage it too much. Wich is fortunate because a lot of filler is needed here. The fitting of the dashboard above the instrument panel was a complete mystery to me. I stared at the manual and dry-fitted it endlessly but in the end, I made a new dashboard with some plastic card and a piece of stretched sprue for the rounded front end. Picture of that should still be on the forum somewhere.

In short, the aircraft is beautifull and a more advanced builder can make a nice looking Pe-2 with it. But prepare for some major/mayor filling and minor scratchbuilding.

Yup, it is a PBY. My next project. I like to keep busy with some other kit if the paint dries on the first one. So, I'm constantly building 2 kits at the same time

It makes for efficient time spending.

On the TV, there was a documentary, the 10 best Infantry Fighting Vehicels on Discovery. IIRC, they where discussing the Hanomag 251 (the German halftrack) It got to third or second place, quite high.

what Kit is the PBY?

The only one I've seen is the Revel. I built one many moons ago and it was no joy to do either

not much detail and the fit was pretty poor. I'd like to find one in 1/32nd if I could (I'm a fan of the big Kits).
