This too bright?

Hi guys, I've finished construction on 'uncle joe' the Pe-2 almost and I'm ready to paint it. I have a clear picture in mind on how to do it. Just a plain green sheme. It looks rather dull but I want to try some new weathering techniques and having one color helps me to judge the results. But the exact shade of green is the problem. From the vvs.hobbyvista.com site, I know I'm looking for something called AMT-4 green. I don't find this particular shade of green readily available from Xtracolor or some other paint company. So I obviously need to mix up something.

Here is the result. I've taken Humbrol nr 2 as a base and added some 121 and an undefined green. But isn't this too bright? What can I do to make it better?

Please help! I know there are some pretty good paint/color freaks out there

Hi Platypus, I did some testing with my acrylics and found that I could control the saturation by mixing in very small amounts of netural gray paint.

I don't know if you have tried this, but it may help tone down the green.

Never use that color chart again

Our colorchart shows clearly how off the FS colors are. Just look at our colors (based on Erik Pilawskii's book Soviet Air Force Fighter Colours using Munsell) and then the closest matching FS595 color which are used by IPMS.

The closest match would be 24151 (silk which even does not exist) so lets compare with 34151 which is the matt version of the color.

The middle one is the original color the right one is FS 34151 which is much darker. I put RAL 6025 at the left since I had a paint cottle of it.
Compared to the color you used your color is a bit too bright and sure too blue.

Translated to model paint I'd say Humbrol 38 (which is gloss) comes close (bit too bright maybe) I had Revell 360 to compare difference which is a RAL 6025 color which I show at the left.

Note: I just used the RAL color as "calibration" since it was my closest color which I also had in very reliable RGB values.

I've brushed away quite a few pots of Revell 360 and I am most certain it is not the color on the left in your pic serval It is however a brilliant 'interior green' for US WWII aircraft. I'll try Adlab's suggestion first and if that doesn't work out, I'm going to try to paint the aircraft Revell 360. Altough that color will need some mixing also. I don't want my cool and sturdy Pe-2 look like the inside of a sissy american aircraft

Revell colors are a bit hard to come by tough...

Point is that IMPS still uses FS numbers for their translation to modelling paint. So, first you get the right most color and then they try to get the matching model paint. So, two chances to get off the color.

Three things you can do:
1: Sew Revell for claiming #360 to be RAL 6025
2: Sew RAL for giving wrong RGB values for their paint (Our RAL colors do come straight from the official RAL software)
3: Calibrate your monitor.

It's your pick.

NB: On my monitor it did match quite good, given you compare paint with an illuminating colorsource.

But I did NOT say to use RAL 360, since that is WAY darker then ATM-4 I said to try Humbrol 38 (or a matching Revell #), since THAT looks closest.

I have the whole interior of the 1:48 Catalina painted that way. I just keep one half of it against my monitor.

Not a very sientific method I know
