Re: Thunderbirds are go!!!!!!!!

Lightnings, Buccaneers, Airfix kits - it's my childhood all over again. Growing up in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s most aviation magazines, most aviation books and most plastic kits originated in Britain. So Lightnings and Buccaneers were remarkably familiar despite never seeing a Lightning. Got close Buccaneers on the HMS Hermes during a goodwill visit - they were like old friends.

Re: Thunderbirds are go!!!!!!!!

I'm with you,anadc4, I remember discovering Airfix magazine at the LHS for first time. It was sheer bliss. It is interesting comparing what passed as quality modelling then and now. Some of the stuff I remember seeing published then you wouldn't even see on a beginners forum today. Airfix, Revell, and Matchbox were all you could afford. My Airfix catalogue was so thumbed it fell apart!
Grubby.

Re: Thunderbirds are go!!!!!!!!

Was given an Airfix Buccaneer kit for Xmas in about 1964. Sure the box said it was a Blackburn NA39, which really dates it.

Airfix's kits were so bland in those days, both in execution and subject matter. But there was a little hardware shop in my street that had Frog kits. They had some fabulous subjects - Fokker D21, Macchi Mc202, Miles Magister.

Those who buy those early Airfix and Frog (Novo) that are still around must wonder how we ever assembled them. But while they were pretty awful, the moulds weren't as sad as they are now. The parts did fit once and they were all there, fully formed!

Re: Thunderbirds are go!!!!!!!!

Ah, nostalgia for Airfix is one thing, but try building a top class model of one of those old kits today, it'll take considerable talent and effort

That's right I like a lot of those planes because they're strange looking, and stylistically, they're the planes that time forgot, but really, to use one of my favorite phrases, they're "bulbous also tapered!" I just can't go in for most jet planes
Now, if you want to talk beauty, I DO see the beauty in the Wyvern

Hey BH: leave the Wyvern alone! That's one of the next ones on my list! If you draw it, I'll click on that nifty new green button and take you off the "distinguished road" you're on!

The Wyvern really is a "beauty and beast" mix. I call it "facinating ugly". So ugly it's actually beautiful.
