New artist seeks home

Hello everyone,

My name is David Carter and I have been an aviation enthusiast for a long time. Done the road from spotter to aviation writer to flight simmer to digital profile art - with several periods of modelling thrown in.

Been looking for somewhere to share my art but I seem to fall into a gap between military and modern civil. My interest is in old propliners, more specifically the DC-4, DC-6 and DC-7. Most DC-4s were built for the military and the DC-6 was developed for the military, so maybe this is the group might be more comfortable.

Here is a sample, done in Photoshop. The original image is about 3000px wide, which I find balances between detail and file size. Picked a military scheme:

Hi there and welcome! I'm sure you've scanned through our profiles section, and found that we've got artists who post here and enjoy all types of aviation profiles. I hope you'll find a pleasant stay here.

Oh, and nice artistic work on the profile.

Re: New artist seeks home

Welcome to this place. Well being a home for people who create skins and profiles is exactly the goal of this site. And to enable you to show your work and create your own corner, we have a gallery that also groups your uploaded work by user: http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/phot...rs.php/cat/500
And we have created a Blog where you can tell about your projects and show pictures that you have directly uploaded to your Blog or to the gallery.

I think you have an interesting subject there, that is not covered too much. But I'm sure there is an enthousiastic audience for it.

Re: New artist seeks home

I cut my teeth doing skins for FS planes, mainly Australian lightplanes for use as AI traffic. I was part of the Aardvark team who produced high-quality, low-polygon AI airlines. I worked on FDEs. Admired the work of the Aardvark repainters so much I decided to give it a go. Most of the stuff I did was on Henry Tomkiewicz's GA planes.

Just over a year ago I decided to move off the 3D canvas to a 2D one. Didn't take long to find out that I wasn't the first person to do it - some of my Aardvark colleagues were already producing profiles. Looked around for a niche and decided classic propliners were under-represented. It was also a subject matter I loved. They require a lot of research but that is part of the fun.

Will look at the blog/gallery. Sounds interesting

Re: New artist seeks home

Thanks for the kind words.

Have some profiles here Aviation Profile Artist . Thought I might be able to sell a few - not even a query . What you see at this site is the evolution of my profiles as I tried to teach myself Photoshop. Never had a manual or the help files because PSh arrived via MSN (yes, took 4 hours!). What is missing is my first efforts, the Fokker F27. The DC-3/C-47 was the second effort and while the profiles at this site are all 800px "save for web" jpegs, the originals have grown from 1500px (F27) to 3000px (DC-6B).

Here is another 800px profile which I was working on when I joined this site. And it's military. Will start using the gallery soon.

Cool! I think your lack of sales might be down to lack of exposure Any plans of military constellations? The Connie is my favorite propliner (Though I like the F-27 too!)

Re: New artist seeks home

I have Connie/Super Connie/Starliner "paint kits" done but they are in storage. Mike Zoeller did a lot of profiles for Air Britain so I decided for the moment not to duplicate his efforts. Might change my mind once I have seen his work. The Air Britain Connie book is on order.

Douglas made a better "canvas" for 2D. Big tail, lots of fuselage in side profile. Connies are very slender. Much better viewed in 3D, I thnk
