"Not enough memory...."

How many time to you get this warning while working in Photoshop? We all know that WIN XP is a big RAM hog and Vista is even worse. Add to that all those little programs that start to fire when you boot up....junk in the tunk so to speak. Did you know that even though you aren't using them, ALL your fonts are running at the same time as everything else? If you are font crazy (like me) and have a lot of them loaded up, it can really sap your RAM and seriously degrade your 'puter performance. The solution to this is of course to remove all the fonts that XP will allow you to move (some you can't move) to a separate folder so that they are no longer plugged into the system, do your business and then plug them all back in again. That's a real pain in the butt, so I was forced to acquire a good font management program which in this case happened to be Extensis Suitcase for Windows which allows me to turn them on and off at the touch of a button. Just thot I'd pass that along.

Re: "Not enough memory...."

It's not the OS's fault so much as you being a stingy bugger and not having enough RAM or a big enough pagefile
Anytime you run something in PS or PSP you're using a MASSIVE amount of memory even for a relatively small task, for image manipulation AND for your undo/redo steps. If you're using a big image size for quality, especially over 2000x2000 say, you're pushing your luck

I use 2Gb RAM and a 4Gb pagefile on a dedicated partition ... if I play with files around 5,000x10,000px even only 1 or 2 layers, then I start getting memory errors ... it's the software that's hogging everything check your taskmanager for more info!

Edit ----> Prefferences ----> Plug-ins & Scratch disks and then set the other scratch disks to other drives. Will get rid of this message once and for all

Re: "Not enough memory...."

Work tidily I used to work my templates up way past the 300mb file size, (skins and profiles), resulting in 3 minute opening times and long delays between saves.
Now I try to keep them under 100mb and save more frequently, it works for me.
I also have a scratch disk set for photoshop use only, so no hang ups there.
The next step will be to move from 2 gig of fast ram to 4 gig and install a dedicated drive for the scratch disk.

Re: "Not enough memory...."

At the moment I'm running a system with 3 hard drives....a 200 Gig for the systen. a 200 Gig for file storage. and a 40 Gig for a dedicated scratch drive. I have 4 Gigs of RAM....so it's hardly that I've stinted on the system.

Adlab, for full sized fighters I generally go 5000px wide. Remember, these are all in B&W as line drawings. I'm still in training diapers.

Re: "Not enough memory...."

I was wondering about the disk size of the working file in megabytes. Also what kind of numbers are you seeing for Scratch Sizes and Efficiency when you get the error?

Re: "Not enough memory...."

Adlab, that's all pretty much greek to me. I push buttons, the 'puter does things. Beyond that I am clueless. Why do you think I havent produced a single colour profile so far?

Re: "Not enough memory...."

I dunno about PS but PSP has fits with files that big, in pixels ... and that's without doing work on it. Do you REALLY need to do them that big?
