Two dumb PSP 8 questions

Hello everyone,

I have PSP8 new on my system ( yes I know its older, but I had a cheap offer and it came with two good books).

When I start I get an error message : Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT.

Searches in diverse fora brought up nothing. Can someone help?

It works seemingly okay but the message is annoying. I would try regedit but I don't know what to do...

Second question:
In my older PSP 7 I have the dds plugin and the Bright export plugin but for PSP8 they don't work: Is this normal?

Cheers,
Pinsel

Re: Two dumb PSP 8 questions

Hi and welcome.

A possible solution for the plugins is to use the DLL files we keep on our download page. Be sure to NOT overwrite any previously existing files though, as that will mess up PSP. Here's a link:
http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/colours/tools.html

Now the registry error. Unless this is a known issue with PSP8, and a PSP user/member here recognizes it and knows a solution, I'm lost.

Since you are not sure on regedit, I'd not make changes there without exact instructions for a fix.

Re: Two dumb PSP 8 questions

Hi Pinsel,

I would check Preferences - File Locations to see if PSP8 has been pointed to the location of the plugins that are working with PSP7.

Ads is right about regedit - not something to be fiddled with lightly - but re-installing PSP clean with no other programs running might fix the registry problem.

BTW *great* avatar! You have to like a fellow who, despite his handicaps, is selflessly ready to perform "prodigious service" in the mine-shaft world of the future!

Re: Two dumb PSP 8 questions

Thanks a lot to both of you for trying to help me .

The plugins from this site did not overwrite anything but the export plugins still don't work. Remove white in the same directory strangely does.

I will fiddle some more over the weekend. Perhaps try one more install.

I have written to Corel Help about the error popup. Maybe they know a solution.

Vigilante, the doctor cracks me up everytime I watch the DVD
This movie is Peter Sellers' masterpiece.

EDIT:
I made a new installation, this time on the second drive, making double sure no Antivirus or Firewall was running and gently swiping the CD.
No more registry error, some of those measures or the sum of them worked

Also got the dds plugin AND the associated dlls and that also works now with Wings of Victory files.

Just the nasty bright.8be doesn't work. Maybe PSP needs other dlls for that, maybe it cannot work with PSP8 at all, hmmm I will investigate further as it would be nice to have all the options under one program...

Re: Two dumb PSP 8 questions

Pinsel,

I am certainly a Junior when it comes to Skinning and PSP but I do have a great deal of experience with the dreaded Windows Registry. I have found that it does help to have a good Registry cleaner. This is something worth paying for. Tweaking the Registry with RegEdit is for masochists and experts, in my opinion. I have done it but didn't enjoy it at all.

Re: Two dumb PSP 8 questions

There are no Dumb PSP questions, the only Dumb PSP questions are the ones which do not get asked.
