I take it you're referring to the fabric covering used on airplanes used before, during and after WW1? I think you could spend hours reading documentation on all the different types of fabric, fabric covering, and coating methods.
Just a for instance, you could go into depth about 1 particular plane and how it was covered and finished, see here-

I think you would find that the British, French and Germans all had slightly different standards and that those standards changes as practices were refined.
