okay here's a couple of questions

1. I have a cannon scanner and it comes with a program called photostudio which lets me put files into 48 bit tagged image files(tif) when I try to open them in gimp it tells me that gimp is only 8 bit and will covert the 48 TIF to 8 bits.

I noticed theres a preference arear btu no way to change gimp to a higher bit setting.


2. I have gimp 2.0 how easy is it to upgrade it? to the new version? and how? the webpage makes it seem so very complicated...

The 48 bit (16 bit per channel) version is completely seperate from GIMP and can be found here (I hope this is up to date):

I am farily sure I just installed new versions and things worked.
