layer effects not working

Hi all,
I'm at my wits' end here...
In one of my template, the layer effects are working fine and in another one, they're not working anymore. Any ideas what may cause this? I don't remember doing anything to change default settings to cause the layer effects not to work in the second template, and I really need this bevel and emboss one...

Check that the layer you are working on has not 'slipped' behind another layer, masking it.
Just a thought!!

I've heard of this before. I think it is some kind of bug and that you cannot solve it in that template anymore.
Try starting a new template and copy the layers to that new template.

I indeed ended up finishing the work on another template. I even reinstalled photoshop before posting here but no go. Strange, isn't it?
