Re: converting..

You can save as PSD format in PSP? I've been working with another guy over at Targetware who uses PSP. The only way I can get his layered files to open in an editable way in PS is with the plugin. Of course his PSP may be a different version and might not have the PSD format option.
I know there was a text layer in one of the PSPs I tried converting that made PS crash every time I tried to open that layer
I often wonder if layer effects and opacities are converted between PSP and PSD with 100% accuracy as well.
So far, my rule of thumb has bee to make sure I have a flattened image of the layered file to compare with just in case

Re: converting..

PSP can open PSD files. So, I guess it can write it also?
But...

Depending on the version you must leave out some filters.
Like the Layer styles (drop down shadow etc). But also the blending options. The last two versions of PSP can handle the multiply option, but every other can give problems while opening.

I 'converted' quite a lot of PSD files to versions that could be opened with PSP. Often by doing that layer by layer and while I gathered knowledge about the problems, by removing suspicious effects right away.
For the layer styles I have a simple trick: Create a new layer under it and merge them. That way the style creating a problem is gone, but the effect is still there. Problem is that it cannot be adjusted anymore...

But this plug-in is sure worth the try

Re: converting..

Hi Guys,
Yes, you should be ok internally between PSP and PS. Just go 'Save as' *.psd format.
I use CS2 and have no problems opening most PS files in PSP (V.8) and I have no problem in CS2 opening a PSP saved *.psd file with layers intact.

I HAVE had the odd issue in PSP opening a *.psd file from PS-CS2, but that usually involves layer effects that are newer than the import filter in PSP.
Better stop now before I confuse myself

Anyway, it shouldn't be a problem going FROM PSP ---> PhotoshopCS by saving as a *psd file.

Cheers
DeanH

Re: converting..

I think the real problem would be going the other way around, opening a PSP in PS. From what my TW PSP counterpart says, and from what everyone in this thread confirms, PSP will open PSDs fine.
I think I'd want both applications going to test files in both directions especially for layer effects and percentages...at least if it were for a paying job Looks like for us plane painting types all our bases are covered
