We all start somewhere. I'm still very much a beginner, but a quick way to get rid of the outer line if you are using CS3, would be to use your magic wand tool outside the drawing (not inside), then invert the selection and go to 'Select/Modify/Expand'. Then expand by the number of pixels equalling the thickness of your drawing line and try blocking in some colour. This should leave you without an external line. Invert the selection and then shade inside. Keep making new layers every time you make changes, and save your work all the time. Tedious , I know, but it will get you started until you develop other ways of achieving the same effect. The other important thing. Light should always come from only one direction. Good luck. The people here all know a lot more than I do and I am sure you will get lots of help.
