Exhaust Theory

Hi to all.
I need some exhaust theory please (BLOWHARD, hello ) to finish this guy:
http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/2207/yak1wip3.jpg

I'm not happy with everything I do now...
Moreover, I would be grateful for any guru advice how to make the effect when the affected paint changes it's original color unpredictably due to temperature overheat...
Besides, my another problem is that the steel tubes are multiply and quite apart from each other... Does that mean that each stain must have it's own "source" or what?
Anybody had any kind of task/problem before?

Re: Exhaust Theory

Like there being no right or wrong with most things profiling, there isn't necessarily a theory, tutorial or some kind of voodoo magic, IM(not always)HO its completely about look and feel.

Look a your references and try to replicate what you see until it feels right.

Oh...and experiment lots with your brush settings.

Not what you want to hear im sure, but Its how I do it.

Over to BLOWHARD.

Re: Exhaust Theory

Me? Why me? Am I exhausted???
Yes, GFR is right, look at the photos. You'll see that the airflow over the side of the fuselage and the effects of the wing boundary air layer will shape the exhaust. Also some engines burn really dark and others leave lighter colors. Best to find every good photo that you can get a hold of.
Then you'll need to see if you can duplicate it.
Over to you Gamary, Jester, Supah, Baron et al.

Re: Exhaust Theory

HAH I draw jets so the exhaust is at the rear of the plane Overal I'd say use black and smudge it into the shape you want then play with blending modes and adding different colours to get it to where you like it. I've never been any good at real artistic weathering

Re: Exhaust Theory

add a bit of really dark blue and a bit of really dark brown into the mix as it makes a subtle difference, do you have a graphics tablet?

No, I don't... Is it obligatory for profiles painting? I always thought it's needed only when making stuff like USAAF nose art or smth...

Btw, here's the example of "exhaust burnt green paint effect" I was asking for... But I swear I don't remember how exactly I did it... Was playing with different exhaust color/blending options...

Re: Exhaust Theory

I use a tablet JUST for the smudge tool, for the rest I find I can do things faster with a mouse and keyboard. There people here who swear by them though, I guess it's something you should just try sometime and see how you get on with it. A small hint btw, I'd lighten the panel lines on the leading edge of the wing, the stand out a bit too much now while they would normally be made pretty much invisible by the highlight on the LE of the wing
