It is a PSD file containing the layers. I tried it with GIMP and it works .
Multiskin means you can paint specific aircraft (say the one of Galland), specific units, specific times (say the fairly short time when that one unit disbanded use of the Hakencross to make a statement) etc. Of course we already have quite a lot, so if you want to make a skin that "fits in", have a look at the available and WIP textures or ask in this thread.

Hello all. Redband_151 suggested I poke around a bit here as I had a notion to modify/personalize one of the BoB2 skins in the way that Stalkervision did with Gretchen, however this is all completely new to me.

Can anyone assist me in getting started with gimp by telling me where the layers that contain the numbers and emblems are located? How do I open an existing skin in gimp in order to make modifications?

I just downloaded gimp so I should probably mention I also have Photoshop CS3 and Dreamweaver, both of which I've used a fair amount. Am I better off working in gimp nevertheless?

Photoshop is as good as GIMP for doing the job. Dreamweaver is not used to make skins for games. To get familiar with GIMP look through our tutorials. To find layers this often is the order of layers from top to bottom:
machinery like gear etc, dirt and smoke, bumpy effects, paint chipping, panellines, markings, camouflage.

An existing skin is saved in BMP or TGA format for example, and thus does not contain layers. You need to download a template for that.

Hello Chumleigh, as suggested CS3 will do the job. While gimp is adequate I originally did the template as .psd and Mausuer's update to the template was likewise saved in that format. THis is the native PS file type. PLease note that bob skins are .dds files so you may need to get the .dds plugin from NVidia if you use Photoshop.
