Worked on the shadow on the rear of the fuselage, where the rudder meets the fuselage, and the root of the wing.

Much much better IMO. In most cases, the hinge between fin and rudder is not very noticeable. What you've done here looks way more realistic.

As for making the wing a separate object, it can make your life much easier, or much harder, depending on your technique and the shape of the wing root/fairing. I guess it's up to every artist to decide what's best/simplest for him.
