I never use lines as a starting point, for me its totally the wrong way to go.
I start out with as many of the basic shapes as I can and go from there.
Nothing wrong with using an overlay of lines as points on the map to check where things are, but I turn them off for the most part.
Here is an example.
I use this method so I don’t have to go through the whole thing and delete the “outlines” that shouldn’t be there. What is the point of drawing something that you are going to have to delete later on? Its doubling your workload.
After all, what was the last object you looked at that had a hard outline around it.
If you need to define a shape with an outline, then there is something wrong with your lighting. Cuz we don’t ever see outlines with our eyes.
