Italian AF DC-6

In keeping with my efforts to post all my military Douglases, an AMI (Italian Air Force) DC-6. Found some good photos to work from and a good image of the 31° Stormo emblem. The 306° Gruppo emblem was more problematic but I did find one that was good enough for use at this scale (the original image is 2950px, making the emblem on the nose a mere 33px wide, in which distance the colour changes 13 times).

Re: Italian AF DC-6

I like that a lot, now you have to be brave and see what she looks like on a white backdrop

Re: Italian AF DC-6

I agree with Jesters: you should try a white background, or at least a much lighter one. Nice work.

Re: Italian AF DC-6

Even white has tone on a 3D object, how else would we be able to see them.

I think it will will stand up anyway, I once did the same sorta thing for my 2nd ever project an A380.

Re: Italian AF DC-6

On white - which is my regular backdrop. Tried a colour because the Aardvark painters always display against a colour and wanted to see what it was like. For the fuselage top, I never use anything whiter than 240,240,240, which is again an Aardvark thing. They reckoned anything brighter was too stark in MS Flight Simulator and I adopted if for profile art. Also never use anything darker than 50,50,50 as a colour. Shadows and highlights are, of course, in pure white 255,255,255 and black 0,0,0.

The anti-glare panel and underwing roundel added.

Its looking great on the white background anadc4. I feel white is the best background because it doesnt distract from the profile

Re: Italian AF DC-6

White is always the best and should be the only choice The plane is the only art there, anything else, text or any other logos or supporting images will complete with the plane for the point of interest. So anything added, including a colored background, should suitably secondary to the plane. That color you used on the first one has a lot of weight on it's own being that the plane is mostly white and silver.
Do you like it on white better?

Tell me what or who the "Aardvark painters" are? Is it a group or just Australian aircraft painters in general? Using specific numbers for lights and darks worries me a little, wouldn't it be better to use your eye to decide how dark to go? Your plane looks fine but the lighting is pretty diffuse. It might be a little more peppy to beef up the shadows just a tiny bit.
