It is a little different in minor ways, but nothing too serious. The only thing I didn't like was the free-type editor plugin wasn't included in the new version. I have never used the "stock" text tool, simply because this plugin allows you to modify the text and then render it with better results.
All you have to do is redownload an old version (unless you still have your old Gimp) and move the freetype file from GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins and copy it into the same folder in your new Gimp. There is a .dll file that is supposed to go with it, but oddly enough it is already included with the new Gimp.
