Serval uploaded one of my tutorials too ... I've been using the pencil tool too. My eraser trick - for 3px spaces between rivets - doesnt work in PSP X or XI but does work in 9.
The best thing is to get used to the copy/paste system. IIRC in 9 you can create a line of 'rivets' then select them & use CTL+arrow keys to duplicate & move them 1px at a time. CTL+SHF+arrow keys moves them 10px ... or something
I've forgotten now but you get the idea ... XI has the same system but uses different keys
